Moving a ticketing desktop application to the web
Desktop → webmigration guarded by acceptance tests
Migration of a desktop application for ticketing, online sales and event booking to an ASP.NET MVC web application, led as team lead.
Context
The business ran ticketing, online sales and bookings for events, including sporting events, on a desktop application. It needed a web application the team could evolve.
The challenge
- Understand a large existing code base before changing it.
- Define a target architecture the team could maintain.
- Keep reporting working while the data moved.
What we did
- Analysed the existing solution with NDepend and set the technical roadmap.
- Designed a SOLID architecture with repository, unit of work, proxy and IoC patterns.
- Modelled a datamart and built the SSIS flows for reporting.
- Automated CI/CD with TFS, and acceptance tests with SpecFlow and Selenium.
- Ran the Scrum ceremonies, documentation and code review.
Outcome
- A web application built to replace the desktop client.
- Automated acceptance tests guarding business behaviour.
- An automated build and release pipeline.
